What do Chinese do online all day?

CIW has released new data about China’s top 10 internet services.

According to market research from China Internet Watch, the breakdown of internet services by time spent remained consistent in the first half of the year. Chinese netizens spent 35% of their time watching videos, by far the largest sector, closely followed by social networking and performing searches.

Most video watching sites, such as Youku.com and Tudou.com who merged last year, are trying to find new ways to optimise their advertising machinery to make commercials more targeted.

Ad spend across social media has also increased significantly as time spent increased 0.5% in July from a month earlier.

E-commerce represented the fourth-largest sector in terms of time spent, with netizens spending 7.6% of their time shopping online. China’s e-commerce market is slated to overtake the US’s this year and is expected to reach 3.3 trillion yuan ($539bn) by 2015, according to a report by Bain & Co.
