In a market where users have come to expect maximum functionality, the latest research indicates that wearable technology is set to become an increasingly competitive market.

The report, entitled Smart Wearable Devices: Fitness, Healthcare, Entertainment & Enterprise: 2013-2018 states that manufacturers are set to capitalise on the rapid development of technologies such as Google Glass - which is due to go into mass production imminently despite still having some bugs that need ironing out.

The Juniper paper apparently moves the market position forward from previous Gartner research, which claimed that wearable technology would remain a limited market without increased functionality.

However, overall the report indicates that, at least in the short-term, wearable technology is likely to be a 'nice-to-have' rather than an essential that could replace smartphones, although health care and monitoring could be a growth market providing privacy and data security issues can be overcome.
