Volvo designs spray paint to light up cyclists

Volvo has released a spray-on reflective paint called LifePaint.

But the paint is not for car drivers, it is designed with cyclists in mind. With the help of  specialists Grey London and Albedo 100, the Swedish carmaker with a reputation for saftety innovation has created the spray-on paint to "make the invisible visible".

Starting with a UK trial, sales of the small spray cans will be targeted at commuters and recreational cyclists who take to the roads at night.

Volvo is making the paint available around London and the county of Kent in the UK, giving away 2,000 cans.

The paint is water based and can be applied to any surface, including fabric.  It washes off, lasting about a week after the initial application. The clear paint won’t affect the colour or surface of anything it is applied to and is totally invisible in daylight.  However, the transformation at night is remarkable, making bikes and riders alike brightly visible in car headlights.
