Speeding at 200+ mph - it's electric

A land speed record that has stood for nearly forty years has been smashed in the UK.

In 1974, an electric car in the US set new records when it hit 170 miles an hour (273 kph). Now, at an airfield in Yorkshire, England, a vehicle sounding very much like a milk float - the electric vehicles traditionally used to deliver milk to homes across the UK - set a new record: 204.2 mph (328.6 kph).

Despite a battery which could hold a charge for just 20 minutes, the ultimate electric car broke the record in front of an excited audience which included VIPs such as Google Chairman, Eric Schmidt.

An electric car race series is planned, but either it will require a very short track to complete the traditional 60+ laps normally witnessed at a F1 Grand Prix, or battery technology will require a significant improvement in charge duration.
