Asia's largest refiner has taken successful steps to reduce its CO2 emissions and improve efficiency at its plants.

The Beijing branch of Sinopec Lubricants is leading the way in a nationwide drive to reduce pollutants and clean up the lubes production process. According to a company spokesperson, greenhouse gas emissions from its Beijing facility fell by 72% in the first half of 2013, while sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions and soot have also dropped by 3.5 and 4.5 tons, respectively.
The facility attributes the decline in pollutants output to the installation of two 10-ton coal-fired boilers that reduce soot output and a blending tank that conserves some 1000Kwh every month. Li Gong, a hydraulic oil technician, also credits a shift in emphasis towards environmental conservation from a grassroots level for the increase in efficiency.
"When selecting raw materials during the product development process, we will now put environmental protection, energy conservation and other factors first", says Li, "from the design stage, we are embracing the pursuit of environmental protection."
The Chinese oil major has earmarked a significant sum of money for plant modifications across Beijing, Chongqing, Jinan, Binhai, Tianjin and other facilities as part of its clean production audit.
