The 60 year-old Pernis complex, near Rotterdam in Holland, is set for imminent closure subject to approval and will further reduce Shell's otput of API Group I base oil.
According to the company, the age of the plant - combined with the limited demand for Group I product - makes the site uncommercial and unviable to refurbish. The Pernis operations had a production capacity of more than seven thousand b/d of base oil along with other operations to develop waxes and process oils.
Shell has a massive presence in the Pernis area, with more than 2,000 employees working in 40 separate plants. The 70 staff currently working at the closing site will be re-deployed elsewhere within the company.
