Nut so good quality

It seems almost every year the Middle Kingdom has another worrying food crisis. From gutter oil, to fake eggs to a river full of swine, Chinese consumers have seen it all. Now a new food scandal is rocking the nation: fake walnuts.

In central China’s Zhengzhou city, fake edible seeds are circulating the supermarkets. At a glance, the nuts look real, but once shoppers cracked them open they discovered not a healthy snack, but instead found a tiny rock sandwiched between the shells.

Walnut counterfeiters had filled some of the shells with concrete, or tiny rocks wrapped in paper sheets to limit noise, and sold them to unsuspecting purchasers at local shops and markets. The police are still investigating the nefarious nut-peddlers.

Apparently, food safety is a tough nut to crack in China.
