Two new environmentally friendly lubes products have been brought to market in the US.
ECO Ultra®, from oil re-refining specialists, Universal Lubricants, is claimed to be an industry first being designed specifically for compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks and vehicles and, according to Universal, "completely eliminates new petroleum products from circulation in CNG fleets while also meeting engine manufacturers' specifications and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) requirements."
As well as the re-refined ECO Ultra product, Universal has also added Orion to its portfolio which, unlike Ultra, is made using virgin base oil. However, both are low ash producing products which are included as part of Universal's proprietary "closed-loop" system.

Meanwhile, Florida-based Green Earth Technologies has announced a new portfolio of API certified bio-lubes which will be available in the US. Set for the Environmentally Preferred Lubricants (EPL) market, the Green Earth brand ranges from an Ultimate Biodegradable Advanced Full Synthetic with 5W-20 to 10W-30 viscosity, to a 2X Refined and 15W-40 Conventional range. There is even a bio-based racing oil series.
Although there is no set definition for EPLs, Green Earth works with base stocks made from renewable or reusable, non-toxic or low toxicity, high biodegradability stock to create its finished products.
