More than 1 million 80+ drivers in the UK

There are more than one million motorists over the age of 80 in the UK, according to the latest research, but safety isn't an issue.

The latest figures come from research by the UK's Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) and shows that there are just over 1 million drivers of 80 and over on the UK's roads.

Although they may not now be driving, there are 122 individuals over the age of 100 still holding valid UK licences - three of them aged 105 and one woman of 106.

Yet, despite their advancing years, the safety record of older drivers shows that experience counts.  The death or serious injury rate of car drivers in the 80+ age range is almost 37% lower than drivers aged between 17-19 where the fatality or serious injury rate was almost one in one thousand drivers.

According to UK statisticians, the ageing population will mean a continued increase in older drivers on Britain's roads - certainly good news for the insurance industry.
