Mitsubishi admits to submitting incorrect fuel consumption figures.
Affecting only models sold in Japan, the company had submitted fuel consumption rates to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). A committee of external experts will investigate the issue and Mitsubishi has promised to publicise the results when they are complete.
Lance Bradley, Managing Director, Mitsubishi Motors in the UK says: “Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has acted quickly and decisively. We understand that such issues are of great concern to consumers. I would like to reassure everyone that there is no evidence to suggest that UK or European models are affected’.
Initial estimates put the number of vehicles based on inaccurate figures at around 600,000 sold in Japan, with the majority being cars produced by Mitsubishi for Nissan.
Production and sales of the four affected models, the Mitsubishi eK Wagon, Mitsubishi eK Space, the Nissan Dayz and Nissan Roox (which are manufactured for Nissan by MMC) have been halted.
