Google India has launched its "Helping women get online" (HWGO) initiative based on research that revealed only one third of the country's 200m internet users are women.  The clearly designed websites in Hindi and English include a range of resources aimed at helping users to understand the basics of using the internet.

Videos are designed to help with subjects such as the basics of using a computer to browsing the web, creating an e-mail account and using the web for language translations.  According to reports, Google India has set a target of 50m women online across the nation by the end of 2014.

The internet search giant ran a 'digital literacy' pilot in a village in Rajasthan, training more than 100,000 women in web basics.  According to Rajan Anandan, MD and VP Sales & Operations for Google India: "Lack of easy access to Internet, lack of knowledge on how to use the Internet and its relevance in their daily lives are the biggest barriers for women to get online. ‘Helping women get online’ is an initiative that aims to overcome these barriers and empower women to improve their lives".
