Shell and AirFlow Truck Co. are developing a concept vehicle with record-breaking fuel efficiency.
Nicknamed the StarShip, the sleek and aerodynamic vehicle aims to break current fuel-efficiency records for Class 8 trucks.
The collaboration is between designer Bob Sliwa, a former racing driver, and Shell Lubricants which will provide technical consultation on engine and drivetrain components and recommendations for lubricant needs. Sliwa's credentials include the Bullet Truck - the forerunner of the StarShip, which achieved 13.4 mpg on a trip from Connecticut to the West Coast.

With aerodynamics playing a key role in greater truck fuel economy, the design will be a single integrated unit joining the tractor and trailer together.
The StarShip will include newly-designed side skirts, hood, front end and custom interior.
A tractor-to-trailer Active Aerodynamics gap sealer, along with the trailer skirts, will retract below 35 mph or when approaching road features such as rail crossings.
The protype will complete cross-country testing in 2017.
