An expensive night out

A 20-year old borrowed his father's £275,000 ($460,000) supercar and wrote it off in an accident.

The young driver and his 19 year-old female passenger, who were not named, walked away with only minor injuries after destroying the 225mph (360kph) Gumpert Apollo sports car.  The accident happened near the village of Brokdorf, close to Hamburg in Germany, when the driver apparently lost control of the car on a sharp bend.

The Audi-engined, 4.2-litre, twin-turbo supercar is capable of accelerating from 0-62mph (100kph) in under three seconds and local police are currently investigating whether the driver was speeding when the accident happened. So violent was the accident, which completely destroyed every panel on the car but left the passenger compartment intact, that one of the gull-wing doors was left 100ft (30m) from the rest of the vehicle.

The night out could prove extremely costly for the young man as German Insurance companies can apparently refuse to pay out if the driver is shown to have been exceeding the speed limit. That would mean a loss of pocket money for some years to come.
