China sends in the troops to fight Ebola

Elite Chinese military unit has been sent to West Africa to help combat the outbreak

China has sent a 163 member-strong military medical team to run a hospital in Liberia as part of the country’s humanitarian effort to fight Ebola. Liberia has been severely affected by the deadly virus and has reported 13,268 cases and more than 5,000 deaths since the outbreak begun.

The corps will operate a 100-bed makeshift hospital at a stadium in Monrovia to help with the relief effort. The Ebola virus has been claiming thousands lives across the region and a lack of medical supplies and training has contributed to its spread.

The superpower has also deployed a 41-strong contingent from the PLA 302 Hospital to Sierra Leone, according to the PLA General Logistics Department. Vice-Premier Liu Yandong was there to see-off the troops before they left for West Africa.

China has pledged to send more than 1,000 medical officers to the worst afflicted regions.
