The Base Oil Project will cost around $1.4bn to build, generating some 1,000 construction jobs at the Mississippi refinery over the next two years, to create a plant capable of producing 25,000b/d of premium base oil.

The new facility will double Chevron's premium oil production, currently made at its Richmond refinery in California and Yeosu, Korea and will apply the company's ISODEWAXING process which allows a wider range of crude oil to be used in the refining process.

The Pascagoula plant, which began operations in 1963, is Chevron's largest wholly-owned refinery and currently produces gasoline, aviation and diesel fuels.  The new lubricants products will supply the North and Latin American and European markets.
