A report from Juniper Research claims an estimated 60 million people are already using AR applications regularly, including the use of smart phone apps and smart glasses.

While the current focus of the technology is on gaming and navigation environments, AR is likely to expand to content relating to everyday use, according to Juniper.

The company is predicting that healthcare and lifestyle will see the increasing use of AR applications.   Already, automotive companies such as Audi have introduced an app to give customers access to vehicle manuals, while Suzuki has become the first motorcycle manufacturer to use the technology for the launch of its new V-Strom 1000 motorcycle.

Meanwhile, ABI Research has forecast that developers will be making investments of more than $2.5 billion in AR apps, particularly in the marketing and retail spaces with  cloud computing identified as the primary driver for AR. Big data analytics is utilising AR and data visualizations through the use of wearable computing devices.
