ArcelorMittal will produce low-carbon fuel from waste gases.
In a collaboration with Primetals Technologies and LanzaTech, the world's largest steelmaker is planning to build a bioethanol facility in Ghent Belgium with capacity to produce enough fuel for an estimated half a million cars.
“Steel is produced through a chemical process that results in high levels of waste gases being emitted; this new technology will enable us to convert some of these waste gases into fuels that deliver significant environmental benefits when compared to conventional fossil fuels,” said Carl De Mare, vice president of innovation at ArcelorMittal.
LanzaTech’s technology uses microbes that eat the waste gases and turn them into bio- ethanol. The new production plant is expected to be completed in 2018.
