Universal Lubricants has passed a new milestone in its motor oil re-refining production.
The Kansas-based company exceeded five million gallons in annual production of its Eco Ultra® re-refined motor oil. The company claims the latest landmark indicates a shift in attitudes of US consumers to green products.
Universal states that for every four-quart oil change using its re-refined product consumers save two barrels of new oil stock. Currently, only around 10% of the US' 1.3bn gallon annual production is re-refined. The remainder is either "improperly disposed of" or burnt as industrial fuel, according to Universal.
The re-refining process uses a highly controlled closed loop process using feedstock from a range of sources including government centres, service stations and oil change centres nationwide. The used oil is then transported to the company's Wichita refinery where it is hydro-treated and mixed with Grade II base stock and high performance additives to create the API-certified product.
