Sales of light vehicles increased by 16% on November, with wholesale deliveries of cars, MPVs and SUVs reaching 1.7m units.
Industry growth rose faster than expected as Japanese manufacturers Toyota, Nissan and Honda recovered from last year's boycott.
Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers show that overall industry sales - including buses and trucks - had reached 19.9m units by the end of November.
Dong Yang, secretary general of the association, was optimistic that December sales would reach at least 1.1m units, putting China on track to meet forecasts set earlier on in the year.
The Ford Focus was the best-selling sedan last month, while Great Wall Motor's Haval line of SUVs remained the most popular nationwide.
Sales at GM, the largest foreign automaker in China last year, also grew by 13% and are on course to reach 3m deliveries by the middle of December. GM also sold the 7% share in Peugot it acquired last year, driving down the latter's share price by 12%.
