Pinterest allows users to upload, save, sort and manage images and other media content through collections called pinboards. It has been described as a virtual bookmarking site.
Expected to have a user base of 59.3 million by 2019 - nearly 30% of US social network users - Pinterest is used mainly by women, although an increasing number of men outside the US are using the site.
Pinterest is also becoming a search platform, with users following a range of pinners and boards which the report flags up as possible competition with Google and Amazon.
The social platform is currently testing advertising on its website to broaden its appeal to digital marketers.
