Having already won its first order from an engine manufacturer in China, Panasonic expects increasingly stringent fuel regulations will spur demand for exhaust products.
The Osaka-headquartered firm, better known for its TVs and cameras, has set up a new plant in Suzhou to produce a new type of catalyst-coated diesel particulate filter that decomposes particulate matter in diesel engine exhaust gas.
The filters can be retrofitted to existing diesel and non-road diesel machinery, according to Panasonic.
Unlike most filters, Panasonic's innovative design does not use platinum and is more energy-efficient as it can decompose particulate matter at lower temperatures than other models.
China, the world's largest exhaust market, is clamping down on emissions standards as its major cities struggle to battle pollution.
