More female buyers and more diverse car parc in UK

In 10 years to 2017, UK parc shows greater model diversity, more female car owners and an increase in automatics.

According the largest survey of the UK car parc by trade body, The Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT by the end of the 2017 there were more than 1,500 different model ranges on Britain's roads, a 25% increase in a decade.

Female buyers and owners also showed similar levels of growth, with 11.8 million women now owning a third of the UK's cars - a 21% increase since 2007 - and 11% more than their male counterparts over the same period.  In total, the UK parc grew by 12% over the decade to put almost 35m cars on the road.

Ford took the top two spots in the table of most popular cars, with 1.58m and 1.4m Fiesta and Focus models respectively, followed by the British-made Vauxhall Corse in third place with just over 1.2m. The Volkswagen Golf and Vauxhall Astra rounded-off of the Top Five.

Although manual gearboxes still dominate, a dramatic rise in automatic sales means they now comprise a quarter of the total vehicle parc, with around 22% of all vehicles less than three years old by the end of 2017.

In terms of vehicle size, despite dual-purpose vehicle sales increasing by a massive 90% over 10 years, the supermini segment remains significantly larger than any other, with almost 11.5m on the UK's roads.
