Johnson Matthey buys Intercat

Additives and chemicals specialists, Johnson Matthey is set to complete the purchase of catalyst fluid producers Intercat by the end of October.

The deal, worth around $86m including debts, will strengthen Matthey's positing in petroleum refining catalysts industry, a sector which is only eclipsed by the environmental catalysts market.

Intercat produces, markets and supports Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) additives, employing around 180 people on sites in the US, Holland and India.  The additives allow petroleum refiners to optimse yields and minimise emissions through the FCC reaction unit and is in increasing demand for use in the production of transportation fuels.

The business will be absorbed into Johnson Matthey's Ammonia, Methanol, Oil and Gas unit as part of its Process Technologies business.
