In March 2012, sales of hybrid vehicles reached 52,000 for the month - a record high - lifting hybrid and all-electric vehicle sales to 3.64% of the US car market.  The previous record was almost three years ago, when sales topped 3.56% help by a scrappage scheme.

The sales boost reflects the US' overall drive for a greener environment with news that it has regained its place at the head of the clean energy investment rankings.  Last year, the US invested more than $48bn in the clean energy sector, an annual increase of $14bn.

The US toppled China from top spot in the investment league, after China's expenditure rose just $0.5bn year-on-year to $45.5bn.  The Bloomberg New Energy Finance data also showed that the G20 nations were the largest investors in the sector, with global clean energy spend hitting a record $263bn; a 6.5% increase on 2010.
