PetroChina parent CNPC and Tencent - responsible for the ubiquitous QQ messenger service and popular WeChat communication app - have entered into a strategic partnership agreement to promote the digital transformation of the nation's energy companies.

The intiative is part of the Internet Plus strategy, brainchild of Premier Li Keqiang, which encourages traditional industries like energy and manufacturing to embrace digital innovation to promote efficiency and productivity.

The two parties will collaborate on numerous projects including mobile payment, internet finance, online-to-offline (O2O) business, group buying and membership management.

Tencent has also offered to provide cloud computing and big data services to support, organise and optimse CNPC's massive network and database of energy consumption patterns.

CNPC and Tencent are no strangers, however, and have worked on digital marketing and online top-up services for CNPC's customers in the past.
