A California Bill to regulate the automotive repair industry has been vetoed.

Sign of the times? Image: CommonsSB778 sought to expand the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR)’s jurisdiction over automotive maintenance providers (AMPs) to categorise "minor services" - such as tyre fitting and lube changes - as if they were major auto repairs.
According to a press release provided to OATS from the Automotive Oil Change Association (AOCA California Governor Jerry Brown's veto followed objections from AOCA and 15,000 AMP-supporting consumers who would have faced longer engine oil drain intervals.
The planned legislation would have meant installers being prohibited from advising consumers to use shorter intervals than those quoted in vehicle owners' manuals.
Lube Report - who also highighted the story - noted that an anti-fast lube bill AB873 also attempted to regulate minor services from auto maintenance providers (AMPs). However, no regulation of minor auto services will happen because Senator Allen linked the two Bills and the SB778 veto sealed the fate of AB873.
