Bentley on ice as Audi goes skiing

Former World Rally Champion has broken his previous ice speed record in a Bentley Continental.

Finland's Juha Kankkunen, four times World Rally Champion and Dakar Rally winner, has re-established the world ice speed record he first set in 2007.  The new record, using the Supersport version of the super-luxury Bentley, broke the 200mph barrier, with an average over two runs of 205.48 mph (330.695 khp).

Running on bioethanol fuel, the 600 bhp, all-wheel-drive convertible had little modification from the production model; the main differences being a full roll-cage and Pirelli SottoZero II winter tyres.

In sub-30 degree temperatures, Kankkunen set the record on a 70cm-thick layer of sea ice that, when liquid, forms part of the Baltic Sea off the coast of Finland.  The Finnish Police were on hand with speed guns, but in this case the only booking Kankkunen received for speeding was from the Guinness Book of Records.

Had the fast Finn chosen to set a downhill ski record, he need have looked no further than the new Audi Design Carbon Skis, set for production in winter 2011.  The black skis use an outer layer of high-strength carbon to cover layers of aluminium and titanium with a wood core.

The skis are designed to be extremely light (1.55kg per 170cm ski) to make them both manoeuvrable and agile and have, according to the German car manufacturer, been "developed with the same obsessive attention to optimum performance, quality and innovative design as Audi cars."  The may also add a whole new meaning to the term "black run".
